Hyderabad: Telangana Prisons and Correctional Services, Director General Dr. Soumya Mishra, stressed the importance of adopting new legal frameworks and asked prison officials to be well equipped to implement them effectively.
She interacted with participants from several states and discussed best practices used in correctional facilities across the country.
She was speaking at the training session on “Sensitization of Prison Officials on New Penal Laws – 2023 on Prison Related Matters” at the State Institute of Correctional Administration (SICA), Hyderabad on Tuesday.
The four-day training session, organized by the Telangana Prisons Department, in collaboration with the Bureau of Police Research and Development (BPR&D), was inaugurated by Soumya Mishra. The session brought together prison officials from seven states: Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh and Odisha.
The initiative was designed to provide prison officials with critical insights into the recently introduced criminal laws and the skills needed to effectively manage correctional facilities.
The training was organized against the backdrop of significant legislative changes introduced through three major laws: Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita – 2023 (replacing the Indian Penal Code, 1860), Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita – 2023 (replacing the Code of Criminal Procedure , 1973) and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam – 2023 (replacing the Indian Evidence Act, 1872).
These progressive laws were intended to ensure faster, more efficient delivery of justice to Indian citizens.
